St Saviour’s Winter Show: Moira Searle

Moira makes unique handcrafted clothing for women.  Her inspiration comes from a love of sea and shoreline where she gathers a wealth of visual information that gives endless possibilities in developing her work.  Moira also has a passion for fashion and especially enjoys clothing from past eras which influence her designs.   Moira uses the Nuno felting technique, which involves laying fibres onto a background of fine silk before felting.  This allows more fluidity in a piece.  Texture is key element and she uses silk, angora, cashmere, merino wool and plant fibres to add textural contrast.  Colour is also important.  Many pieces are made with undyed fibres which are then dyed to create Moira’s specific vision for the piece.  Fibres respond differently to the dye which further enhances textural contrasts.  Available for commissions.

During lockdown Moira was inspired to draw from a Victorian family christening gown and has made pieces on themes of connection and time. Using details from the gown’s lacework Moira has created wearable garments with a sense of fragility and passing time.
