St Saviours Winter Show: Cat Coulter

Cat Coulter’s art practice involves gathering and re-presenting found objects, particularly those which have been lost at sea or on beaches. It highlights the consequences of our throw-away society on the natural environment.

Cat’s work explores the transformative effects of seawater and sunlight in eroding and distorting familiar objects into new organic shapes. Above are ‘The Least We Owe The NHS’ and ‘The Sanitisation of Adam” (Pristine Chapel)’, two works created as a response to both the sterling work done by the NHS and frontline workers and the alarming amount of single use PPE gloves, masks etc already washing up on our shores.

In response to the many new challenges of 2020, including the increase in littering of single-use plastics and nos canisters, Cat has chosen use a method traditionally used to record images of the natural world to create cyanotype photograms using discarded waste materials.

The resulting prints offer new perspectives.  The source materials are given a renewed purpose and a voice to question their status as waste. The objects are put on display to demonstrate that they have not disappeared by being discarded. The images and titles raise awareness, challenge attitudes and encourage a positive response.
