Natural Dyeing: A Heritage of Colour at the V&A

We’ve SOLD OUT! But if you’re interested you can add yourself to the waiting list for next year!

We’re really excited about this wonderful development – we will be teaching at the V&A Academy in October delivering a week long comprehensive natural dyeing course. Our five day course at the V&A Academy runs from the 2nd to the 6th of October and is available to book here.

Using Jenny Dean’s Colours from Nature as a foundation, we will be covering the traditional dyes as well as the use of mordents and modifiers to shift tone and expand the palette. We will also be looking at how to create natural pigments and stunning patterns through contact printing. At the end of the week you will have your own samples and an understanding of Natural Dyeing best practices. You will be able to see the creative potential of natural dyes and the vast range of colours that you can produce.

In addition you will have the unique opportunity to experience behind-the-scenes gallery tours with V&A textile curators and exclusive object-handling sessions, bringing the renowned V&A collection and history of natural dyeing to life through hands-on learning experiences. This is amazing opportunity to experience behind the scenes at the Museum and to spend time in the wonderful building that dates back to 1857 and which is a work of art in itself. It house an incredible collection that encompasses everything from 3000BC Indus Valley pottery, traditional Indian textiles and William Morris’ wallpaper designs to Catherine the Great’s dinner service, Eileen Gray’s furniture designs and the first iPhone. We are so pleased to be partnering with the V&A to be delivering this course. You can book your place here.
