The Protea – beauty in death

We tend to keep flowers long after they’ve been at their best. I much prefer blooms when they are fading and loosing their petals, they’re far more interesting to photograph. The last time we bought Proteas, we kept them long after their prime and I’m so glad we did. The shell and seeds of this plant are stunningly beautiful and have made for some lovely images. @spottedhyenas prepped the flower for me and I took the photos, a moderneccentrics collaboration! I am currently sketching these blooms for a project I am working on, so we’ll be buying some more and I intend to take shots of the flower all through it’s life cycle.

that’s a very beautiful idea. I love decay, too, there’s so much beauty in it.
